Combining the maritime industry’s tradition of collaboration in the face of emergencies at sea with state-of-the-art technology, and the unifying power of freedom of contract under English maritime law, to respond to the climate emergency
The Blue Visby Solution is a
The Blue Visby Solution is not linked to any individual trade participant and is completely independent, so that the entire industry can trust it as a neutral and collaborative platform.
The Blue Visby Solution provides the platform for self-regulation and co-operation amongst all stakeholders at the scale necessary to tackle the greatest single cause of GHG emissions in maritime trade.
comprised an The Blue Visby algorithm assigns optimal arrival times to each vessel sailing to a specific destination by processing four sets of parameters:
an
- individual vessel specifications and performance;
- the specifications and performance of all other ships sailing to the same destination;
- port congestion at the destination, and
- environmental conditions (weather, currents, swell, bathymetry, tides).
The Blue Visby Operations System monitors four sets of parameters in a dynamic way – (a) individual vessel specifications and performance; (b) the specifications and performance of all other ships sailing to the same destination; (c) port congestion at the destination and (d) environmental conditions (weather, currents, swell, bathymetry, tides) – and communicates to the vessels their optimal arrival time calculated by the Blue Visby algorithm, while keeping their order of arrival as if they had sailed independently without the involvement of the Blue Visby Solution.

Blue GA is a sharing mechanism inspired by general average, which enables the stakeholders on each voyage (shipowners, charterers and cargo interests) to share the costs and benefits of the implementation of the Blue Visby Solution, i.e. the saving in fuel, the costs of the prolongation of the ocean passage, and the financial value of emissions savings where applicable.
and a The participants of the Blue Visby Solution incorporate into their charter parties and cargo sale contracts a set of terms that implement the Blue Visby Operations System and Blue GA, which create the contractual basis for the operational system of the Blue Visby Solution. They also become members of an association modelled on Protection & Indemnity Clubs, the Blue Visby Mutual Association, which regulates the relationships amongst participants, and administers Blue GA, with complete independence, neutrality and integrity.
The Blue Visby Solution combines technology with two of the maritime industry’s most remarkable and enduring features: the inter-connectedness of stakeholders through agreements they freely enter into under English law, and long-standing traditions of collaboration in the face of common threats.
The below visualisation compares the traffic to Port Hedland during 2019 with how it would have been if optimised by the Blue Visby algorithm.
